Activities

  • Quarrying of raw materials is one of the environmentally disagreeable activities associated with the production of cement, which usually leaves scars on the landscape.
  • For this reason we are following a policy of rehabilitation by landscaping those quarries, or parts of them, that are no longer being used, by planting indigenous and hence climatically suitable trees and bushes in these areas. We also contribute fully to the special land rehabilitation funds established by the Government.

We are pursuing a policy towards controlling the air/wind dust by regularly watering all Quarry and Plant roads using recycled and rain water. Formation of a small water pond at the lower level of one of our quarries enable us to collect all the run off rain water from the quarry and use it for the roads watering. Where possible we tarmac roads to and from quarries (we have already covered  60% of these roads).

  • We control the Ground and Air Vibrations resulting from the use of explosives.
  • We make regular Preventive Maintenance of machinery to minimise emissions.
  • We invest continuously in the modernisation of our dust collecting equipment, to reduce emissions to levels even lower than those specified by legislation.

(The Cyprus Cement Company Ltd with the installation of it's second production line, which began operation in early 1975, introduced emission control levels that were at the time pioneering for Cyprus standards. Since then it has endeavoured to maintain the lowest possible levels of dust and other harmful emissions, associated with the industrial process of cement production.)
